Escondido, CAMonday, December 5, 2016 — The California Center for the Arts, Escondido is proud to present legendary humorist and author Garrison Keillor for an evening of heartwarming storytelling on Wednesday, January 25, 2017, at 7:30 pm in the Concert Hall. Keillor’s hilarious anecdotes will be delivered with that signature “down comforter” voice, dry sense of humor, massive charisma, and Midwest wisdom. This is a rare opportunity to witness America’s favorite storyteller as he brings his singular comic monologues and thought-provoking observations during his final tour and appearance in the San Diego market. Interviews and hi-res photos of Garrison Keillor are available upon request.

Keillor is best known as the host of American Public Media‘s A Prairie Home Companion from 1974 – 2016. A master storyteller, he began his radio career as a freshman at the University of Minnesota. He went on to work for Minnesota Public Radio in 1969, and later he hosted the first broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion in St. Paul, Minnesota on July 6, 1974. The show ended in 1987, resuming in 1989 in New York as The American Radio Company, but eventually returned to Minnesota in 1993 to broadcast under its original name. A film adaptation of the show, titled A Prairie Home Companion, was released in 2006 starring Keillor as himself alongside several acclaimed actors including Meryl Streep, Lily Tomlin, Lindsay Lohan, Woody Harrelson, John C. Reilly, and Tommy Lee Jones. After over forty years of hosting A Prairie Home Companion, Keillor retired from the show in 2016 and the new host is mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile. Today, A Prairie Home Companion is heard by 3.5 million listeners each week on more than 700 public radio stations, and abroad on the American Forces Networks, SiriusXM Radio, Radio New Zealand, and KPRG in Guam.

Keillor has authored several pieces of literature including Lake Wobegon Days, The Book of Guys, The Old Man Who Loved Cheese, and countless others. His most recent releases include his first book of poetry, O, What a Luxury: Versus Lyrical, Vulgar, Pathetic & Profound (2013) and a collection of stories, essays, and poems, The Keillor Reader (2014). Many of his works are written with his characteristic combination of humor and insight on love, modernity, nostalgia, politics, religion, and other facets of daily life.

Keillor is the recipient of numerous awards, including a GRAMMY® Award for “Best Spoken Word or Non-Musical Album” for his recording of Lake Wobegon Days. He’s also received two Cable ACE Awards and a George Foster Peabody Award. Keillor’s a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and was recently presented with a National Humanities Medal by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The radio icon was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame at Chicago’s Museum of Broadcast Communication in 1994.

With renowned conductor and organist Philip Brunelle, Keillor has performed with many orchestras, including the Chicago, Milwaukee, San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Minnesota, Dallas, and National Symphonies. He’s appeared at Wolf Trap, Carnegie Hall, and other major concert halls as a member of The Hopeful Gospel Quartet, and has performed on his own in one-man shows across the country and on tour broadcasts of A Prairie Home Companion.
