On Sunday Iran said it has begun enriching uranium in violation of the limits set by the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, commonly known as the “Iran Nuclear Deal.” Iran’s actions are thought to be an effort to pressure European countries to assist with the economic sanctions imposed by the Trump administration. President Trump withdrew the U.S. from the agreement back in May of 2018. Trump has repeadedly said he wants to negotiate a new deal with Iran, but no negotiations are in process.
Iran has said it will begin enriching uranium for its Bushehr power plant to 5%, and is threatening to go up to 20%. Under the agreement, Iran was to limit such enrichment to no higher than 3.67%. An enrichment of 90% is needed for nuclear weapons.
